LOLLAPALOOZA 2018: DAY ONE – PART TWO
LOLLAPALOOZA 2018: DAY ONE – PART TWO
With: Billie Eilish, Chvrches, Camila Cabello and Travis Scott
Thursday August 2nd 2018
Grant Park Chicago
Here’s Part Two from Lollapalooza 2018, and it’s towards the end of Day One with the headliners.
Billie Eilish form Tito’s Stage at the northern end of Lollapalooza.
Billie Eilish- an American singer- songwriter who’s grown a massive massive following in such a short period of time.
Bille is set to go on at 6pm, and the Tito’s Stage is packed- more than I’ve ever seen it. The girls in attendance are beyond excited to see her perform, crushing to the front of the fencing to get as close as possible.
Everything About Billie Eilish in the past six months has gone viral, and has grown a massive audience with massive success.
Billie comes out in a lime green t shirt, a lime green skull cap, lime green everything.
She has a laissez – faire kind of attitude, and yet- It’s captivating, and clearly fun to photograph.
Yes- we’re all gonna hear more from Billie soon. She sold out the Metro’s upcoming show in like- minutes.
Up next at Lollapalooza at the Grant Park Stage: Chvrches. Another cool and in the moment Scottish synth pop band, with a dynamic lead vocalist in Lauren Mayberry.
Have to say this band keeps getting better and better as a live performing act every time they proceed to come through town.
Lauren Mayberry keeps growing more and more confident as a lead singer / frontwoman, more carefree, more twirls per song, and more relaxed and free of insecurities. A great set from them at Lollapalooza.
Then off to Camilla Cabello, headlining opening night at Lollapalooza on the Lake Shore Stage.
Camilla is all Show and stylish panache.
Her songs fit the mold of a multi talented singer- songwriter- performer- heavy on the looks and appearance, lots of coordinated dance moves with backup singers / dancers, and lighting front and center to better let you know that she means business not just in looks and costume, but in coordinated dance moves done like in a small and sweaty dance club in Havana.
Camilla has the look and feel of we’re way way past anything remotely to deal with my past life in Fifth Harmony. Like- been there – done that.
Camilla has the look and feel of confidence, and that this is just the tip of the iceberg with new material and tours to come.
Camilla at Lollapalooza 2018. What seems like an odd pairing for this kind of festival- actually works.
And lastly- Headlining the northern end of Lollapalooza from the Bud Light Stage: Travis Scott.
With all that baggage from his fiasco at Lollapalooza from a couple of years ago from the Perry’s Stage and his arrest for inciting a riot and resisting arrest- well, if you’re headlining Lollapalooza, all has been forgiven.
At least you’re given on more chance, in which case- don’t fuck things up and sabotage everything.
Not the case tonight.
Travis is clearly developing into quite the showman.
No offense to Arctic Monkeys headlining the southern end of Lollapalooza.
The north side at the Bud Light Stage is packed everywhere.
Security and C3 personnel are giving us photographers instructions last minute on exactly how many songs they can allot us to shoot, and from where in the pit, simply because of logistics and security reasons.
Obviously they’re all gearing up for the worst.
Which never suffices.
As talented and crazy this show ends up being- it’s still controllable.
I stuck around for two and a half songs, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to capture Travis, even though he was heavily backlit in rich hues of blues and reds, and then the gigantic LED screen adding a texture of 3D reality.
His raps and songwriting hold up well through this performance, with Travis roaming menacingly across the stage at any given moment.
A riveting way to end Day One of Lollapalooza.
Hope you all like the photos.
