Stange 90’s, a benefit for Jerry Bryant of JBTV Music Television on Friday March 8th from the Metro Chicago, featuring headliner’s Naked Raygun, Andrew WK, Local H, Kill Hannah, Matt Walker and so much more.
Jerry Bryant, founder of JBTV Music Television, has paved his own path in a career spanning over 37 years as the award winning host and all around guru of all things “Music”, and his baby- JBTV Music Television.
When it was announced last August that Jerry has Stage Four Colon Cancer, it came as a shock to us all that have worked with Jerry for so many years.
It goes without saying that most of us at JBTV feel that he’s invincible, a Superman of sorts, a workaholic in the best and most passionate way when it comes to the programming of JBTV: Jerry edits, hosts, runs the main rig camera and works directly with all the interns to help run each and every show and performance.
Jerry will be the first to tell you now and in the present day to not take your health for granted.
It’s not fun getting old, but what truly helps in recovery of such a nasty beast as Stage Four Colon Cancer, is having a passion for doing what you do, and fighting the fight to pursue your dreams tenfold.
I say this as truth when it comes to Jerry Bryant, and witnessing firsthand over the years being one of his Chief Photographers for JBTV.
Every performance at our intimate studio in River North Chicago is treated the same, whether it be an up and coming artist, or an established act.
It doesn’t matter to Jerry: they’re all important, and nothing should be taken for granted.
And so the benefit to help Jerry with his gargantuan medical expenses was formed: “Strange 90’s: A Benefit to help Jerry Bryant and his fight with Stage Four Colon Cancer”.
To have this special benefit at the one and only Metro Chicago, with owner of the Metro Joe Shanahan literally making the Metro “Jerry’s house for the evening”, (Joe’s words), just makes this event that more special.
And the artists that took generously of their time to play cover songs of their liking for each and every performance, made the event one of a kind and oh so special as well.
The acts, a virtual who’s who of the Chicago music scene and alumni of JBTV Music Televison: Jeff Pezzati and his band Naked Raygun, Andrew WK, Lizzy Plapinger and Matt Walker, Brittany Bindrim along with Walter Flakus, Tom Higgenson of Plain White T’s, Kill Hannah, Scott Lucas and Ryan Harding of Local H, Madina Lake, and Kontrolled Kaos to round out the bill.
There was a live auction between acts, hosted by 101WKQX’s Lauren O’ Neil, which helped bring in extra dollars for Jerry’s cause: signed posters, setlists and JBTV memorabilia.
All of this, with also the support of Charity Bomb, a philanthropic non profit, which when you see them in action over the 48 hours like I did, they are devoted, hands on, and well, they drum up love in all its forms, and embrace a particular cause such as this benefit for Jerry Bryant.
Many thanks go out to Ryan Ford and Tana Rule at Charity Bomb, along with Matthew and Nathan Leone, and Nik as well.
The show was enhanced ten times over with Charity Bomb’s assistance.
And as for Jerry Bryant: he just had ostomy reversal surgery last week, and lo and behold, he’s up and running within days and back doing what he loves the most- working and living and breathing all things JBTV.
Cheers- Bobby Talamine – Music Photographer
